Chloe Ferris, 24, from Belfast, tragically died in a nightclub toilet after staff became concerned that the door had not opened for about half an hour. An inquest has revealed that her death was caused by a “lethal combination” of cocaine, ketamine, and alcohol.
Reports indicate that Chloe had been drinking at her home with friends in December 2024 before getting a lift to a bar in Belfast City Centre. Two of her friends told police that Chloe had organised the purchase of cocaine, which they described as somewhat “out of character” for her.
Later that night, Chloe and one of her friends entered a toilet cubicle at Lux nightclub at approximately 1:17 a.m. Staff became concerned when, during routine checks, they found that the door had not opened for about thirty minutes. Both women were discovered unconscious inside the cubicle. Chloe’s friend regained consciousness, but Chloe was pronounced dead within the hour on December 1, 2024.
The inquest revealed that Chloe had cocaine, ketamine, and alcohol in her system at the time of her death. While the individual amounts of each substance were not considered particularly high, experts stated that the combination of a stimulant and a depressant can have unpredictable and dangerous effects.
Coroner Joe McCrisken indicated that the cocaine purchased by Chloe may have been mixed with ketamine without her knowledge. He explained that even small amounts of such a combination could trigger severe reactions in the body, sometimes with fatal outcomes.
Authorities confirmed that a criminal investigation into Chloe’s death remains active. The circumstances surrounding how the drugs were obtained and whether they were tampered with are still being examined. Police have urged anyone with information about the night in question to come forward.
Chloe’s death has reignited conversations around the dangers of recreational drugs, especially when combined with alcohol. Friends, family, and the wider community have expressed shock at the tragedy, and have called for increased awareness of the risks associated with nightlife and substance use.
Many are also highlighting the responsibility of nightclubs to ensure the safety of patrons, including regular monitoring and prompt response when individuals appear to be in distress.
Chloe Ferris’s death serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a night of fun can turn fatal when substances are involved, and the importance of vigilance both personally and within public venues.
