Tensions erupted on Tuesday when a member of the House of Representatives from Zamfara State was violently confronted by an angry crowd in Dansadau town. The constituents, reportedly frustrated with the lawmaker’s performance since taking office, physically assaulted him, dragging him across the ground and slapping him in front of stunned onlookers.
A video obtained by SaharaReporters shows the lawmaker being manhandled by the mob while security operatives struggled to shield him. The crowd could be heard chanting “bamayi”, a Hausa term signifying rejection or lack of support. Residents said the term reflected their deep dissatisfaction with what they described as the representative’s repeated failure to address local concerns.
According to local sources, the attack was fueled by long-standing grievances from constituents who alleged that the lawmaker had abandoned the community since his election victory. Community members complained that requests for development projects, empowerment programmes, educational initiatives, and regular constituency engagement had been ignored for months.
“The people have been patient for too long,” said one resident who witnessed the attack. “Repeated appeals for roads, schools, and youth programmes have fallen on deaf ears. This is why we had to show our anger directly.”
Security personnel on the scene eventually intervened, managing to overpower the attackers and safely escort the visibly shaken lawmaker into a waiting vehicle. Authorities have yet to provide an official statement regarding the incident. The Nigeria Police Force and the House of Representatives have not confirmed the identity of the lawmaker involved.
Political analysts say the incident highlights growing tensions in parts of Zamfara State, where residents feel increasingly marginalized and neglected by their elected representatives. Local leaders have called for urgent dialogue between lawmakers and constituents to prevent further unrest and restore public confidence in the democratic process.
Observers warn that if grievances continue to be ignored, similar confrontations may become more frequent, underscoring the critical need for accountability, transparency, and proactive governance at the constituency level.
