Nana Kazaure, the Head of Media and Strategic Communications for the Obidient Movement, has sharply criticised several individuals included in President Bola Tinubu’s proposed ambassadorial list. She argued that some of the nominees should be facing prosecution rather than being appointed to represent Nigeria on the international stage.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Friday night, Kazaure voiced serious concerns about the credibility of the list. She stated that a number of the nominees have unresolved corruption allegations, with at least one individual still facing an ongoing case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. According to her, rewarding such individuals with diplomatic roles reflects poorly on Nigeria’s institutions and undermines the fight against corruption.
Kazaure also highlighted that some of the nominees had publicly criticised President Tinubu in the past, using what she described as unprintable words. She questioned why individuals who once attacked the presidency are now being entrusted with representing the country abroad.
She further lamented that the list sidelines experienced career diplomats who have dedicated decades to national service and are now being overlooked despite their qualifications and readiness to serve. According to her, this disregard for merit has contributed significantly to the public dissatisfaction surrounding the nominations.
Kazaure added that the controversy has drawn both local and international attention, reinforcing concerns about Nigeria’s commitment to transparency and institutional integrity. She urged the Senate to thoroughly scrutinise the list, especially as there appear to be cases where two nominees bear the same name. She said that this raises further questions that need urgent clarification.
She concluded by calling on lawmakers to prioritise competence, accountability and public trust as they review the proposed ambassadorial appointments.
