A tragic road accident on Saturday claimed the life of a young female child at the Osisioma Umuimo area of Aba, Abia State, leaving residents and road users in shock and mourning.
The accident involved a Lexus 330 SUV, a commercial tricycle commonly known as keke, and a long truck conveying goods. The incident occurred near Kentus Filling Station, a busy stretch of the Osisioma axis that often experiences heavy vehicular movement.
An eyewitness, Mr. Igwe Nwoke, a transporter who witnessed the incident, said the tricycle was conveying several passengers when it attempted to avoid a truck approaching from the opposite direction. In the process, the tricycle reportedly lost control and crashed into the Lexus SUV.
According to Nwoke, the impact of the collision caused panic at the scene, with several passengers sustaining varying degrees of injuries. He said the young child was among those seriously injured and reportedly became unconscious immediately after the crash.
“Some of the passengers were seriously injured, including a little child who became unconscious,” Nwoke said.
He expressed regret over what he described as increasing recklessness among drivers on Nigerian roads, noting that poor driving habits and lack of caution have continued to result in avoidable accidents and loss of lives.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Abia State, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeoma, confirmed that one female child died as a result of the crash.
“One female child died. The crash happened at Osisioma Umuimo by Kentus Filling Station, involving a Lexus Jeep 330 and a keke,” Ezeoma stated.
She added that officers of the FRSC responded promptly to the accident and ensured the evacuation of the injured to nearby medical facilities for treatment. She also urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules and drive cautiously, especially in busy urban areas, to prevent further tragedies.
The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety in Aba, with residents calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased public awareness to reduce accidents and protect lives.
