The Abia State University community has been plunged into grief following the sudden and tragic death of a first year student, Michael Wonderful Nikeur, who was found lifeless in her room at an off campus residence on Wednesday, November 26.
Wonderful, a 100 level student in the Department of Food Science and Technology, was discovered at Las Vegas Lodge, a popular student accommodation near the university. Her death has sent shockwaves across campus, especially among fellow first year students who described her as gentle, quiet and focused.
Residents of the lodge said concern grew when Wonderful had not stepped out of her room for an unusually long period and was not responding to knocks on her door.
A neighbour who preferred to remain anonymous recalled the moment they realised something was wrong.
"As the day passed and there was still no sign of her, we knew something was wrong. We kept knocking and calling her phone, but there was no response," the resident said.
After failed attempts to reach her, some occupants forced her door open and found her lying motionless on the floor. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel confirmed her death.
Students close to Wonderful said she had a history of asthma, raising concerns that she may have suffered an attack while alone in the room. However, the exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed. University authorities and medical professionals are yet to issue a formal statement on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The news has left many ABSU students in shock, with friends and classmates struggling to process the loss of someone who had only just begun her university journey.
"We are devastated. She was just starting her life here. She kept to herself, but she was very focused," a fellow first year student said.
The incident has sparked conversations about student health, safety and the risks faced by students who live alone off campus. Many students are now calling for stronger health support systems and increased welfare checks in lodges.
Wonderful’s death serves as a painful reminder of the fragile nature of life and the importance of community care among students. As ABSU mourns the passing of a promising young scholar, tributes continue to pour in from those who knew her.
The university community remains in deep sorrow as they await further clarification on what led to her tragic death.
