The woman at the center of a viral wedding video that caused a major stir on social media last week has spoken publicly for the first time, offering her side of the story and insisting that the now-famous confrontation was not spontaneous, but a reaction to months of unwanted advances.
The incident, which took place at a wedding ceremony and quickly went viral, showed the woman slapping her alleged boyfriend after he proposed to her in front of a crowd of guests. The video sparked widespread debate online, dividing social media users and raising questions about public proposals and consent.
In her statement to the media, the woman said her actions were deliberate and followed repeated attempts to discourage the man’s advances. She explained that he had been persistently pursuing her despite several rejections and that she had made her stance very clear to him on multiple occasions.
“You have been asking a lady out and she clearly told you that she cannot date you and even gave you reasons,” she said. “One of the reasons is that he stays in Port Harcourt while I stay in Lagos. I do not do long-distance relationships. I have made it clear several times.”
She stated that her refusal had nothing to do with hostility, but with practicality and personal preference. Despite this, she claimed, the man continued to contact her and even went as far as showing up uninvited at events she attended.
According to her, the proposal at the wedding was not an act of love but a deliberate stunt meant to put her in an uncomfortable position. She described it as “a calculated attempt to gain attention and force a reaction.”
“Why would you come to a wedding that you and I were invited to and then propose to somebody there? Does it make sense to you?” she asked. “You wanted to disgrace yourself, I just helped you. Now everybody is blaming me for it.”
She explained that she was shocked when he went down on one knee during the wedding ceremony, especially since she had previously rejected him several times. Her immediate response, she said, was not out of anger but disbelief and frustration at being publicly embarrassed.
Following the incident, the woman said she had been subjected to intense online criticism, with many people condemning her reaction and calling her disrespectful. She revealed that she had also received threats from strangers and acquaintances who sympathised with the man.
“I have been getting death threats because of this video,” she said. “People should stop twisting the story and making me look like the villain. I reacted to a situation that was completely avoidable if he had respected my decision.”
The video has since continued to circulate across various social media platforms, with users debating whether public proposals are romantic or manipulative. Some have defended the woman, arguing that she had the right to reject a proposal made without her consent or comfort. Others, however, criticised her reaction as excessive and argued that she could have handled the situation more calmly.
Relationship experts and social commentators have weighed in on the matter, noting that public proposals often create pressure on the recipient to say yes, even when they are not interested. They emphasised the importance of mutual understanding, private communication and respect in romantic relationships.
As discussions around the incident continue, the woman said she hopes the controversy will serve as a lesson about boundaries and consent. She maintained that she does not regret standing her ground and that people should think carefully before making public gestures that could backfire.
“This should teach people that consent is important,” she said. “You do not surprise someone into a relationship or a proposal. It is not fair to anyone involved.”
