The Yobe State Police Command has arrested several suspects for sexually assaulting minors in Jakusko and Fika Local Government Areas of the state. The arrests come as the command reports a recent surge in cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV), particularly rape and child abuse, across the state.
In one incident, a 20 year old HIV positive man, Rabilu Sani, was arrested for luring a 4 year old girl into a room and sexually assaulting her. Medical examination confirmed severe injuries, and investigation revealed that Sani is HIV positive. In another incident, a 23 year old grinding machine operator, Yusuf Garba, was arrested for luring a 5 year old girl into his shop and sexually assaulting her. Additionally, two men were arrested for gang raping a 16 year old girl in Babban Gida.
The Yobe State Police Command has expressed deep concern over the recent increase in GBV cases, with 25 cases of rape recorded so far, mostly involving minors below the age of nine. The command has directed all operatives to handle GBV and rape cases with utmost professionalism and sensitivity, ensuring diligent investigation and timely prosecution. Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, has warned that no offender will be spared, and anyone involved in such crimes will face the full weight of the law.
The command is calling on parents, guardians, religious and community leaders, as well as civil society organizations, to remain vigilant and work with the police to protect minors from predators lurking within communities. The statement shared security tips for parents and guardians, urging them to know where their children are at all times and who they are with, educate children on Safe Touch, Unsafe Touch in simple language, and report suspicious behavior immediately.
