Award-winning Nigerian Afropop singer, songwriter, and actress Yemi Alade has opened up about her preference for natural African hairstyles over wigs, citing comfort and practicality as her main reasons.
The acclaimed artist explained that while she admires women who wear wigs, she finds maintaining them too demanding.
“My fellow ladies usually wear long, gorgeous wigs. I like them. My issue with wigs is that I don’t know how to take care of them,” Alade said.
The “Johnny” crooner also shared how wigs often pose challenges during her energetic stage performances.
“It’s a lot of work. And now, with 360 wigs and the glues — imagine me dancing on stage. When I sweat, the wig cap will just shift. That’s not the headline I want. I need some rest,” she added with a laugh.
Alade emphasized that her signature African-inspired hairstyles are not only easier to manage but also reflect her identity and cultural pride.
“I stick to African hairstyles that are low maintenance, fit my identity, and suit my lifestyle. Life is easier that way. I didn’t come into this world to be uncomfortable all day,” she said.
Her candid remarks have sparked admiration from fans who praise her authenticity and commitment to representing African beauty and culture through her artistry.
