A yet to be identified woman has been killed while heading to the Gadabuke market on Tuesday morning, heightening tension among residents of Dazhi village and surrounding communities. Dazhi lies on the boundary between Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory and Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
According to residents, the woman set out early for the market but was attacked along a bush path frequently used by traders. Witnesses said unknown individuals confronted her and took her mobile phone before escaping. Her body was later found by villagers who immediately alerted security operatives at the Gadabuke Police Division.
Danlami Yakubu, a resident of Dazhi, told journalists that the discovery shocked the community. He said villagers came across the victim in the bush and promptly reported the incident, leading to the swift arrival of police officers at the scene.
The Chairman of Toto Local Government Area, Alhaji Ahmed Baba Yahaya, confirmed the killing during a telephone interview on Thursday. He described the development as tragic and said he visited the scene with security personnel shortly after receiving the report. He also met with community members at the village head’s palace, where he appealed for calm and assured them that authorities were committed to finding those responsible.
Yahaya directed all security agencies in the area to intensify patrols and prioritise the investigation. He encouraged residents to volunteer credible information that could aid the arrest of the perpetrators. He further reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property and extended condolences to the victim’s family.
A police source at the Gadabuke Division, who requested anonymity, confirmed that a full investigation is underway. The police are working to identify the victim, locate her relatives, and establish the circumstances surrounding the attack. No arrests have been made as of the time of filing this report.
The incident has raised concern among residents of Dazhi, Gadabuke, and neighbouring villages who frequently rely on the bush path to access the local market. Community leaders are urging authorities to strengthen security presence along the route, with many traders expressing fear about travelling alone in the early hours of the morning.
Local stakeholders say they hope increased security efforts will help restore confidence and prevent further incidents in the area.
