White House Placed on Lockdown After Shooting Near Presidential Residence, Two National Guard Members Injured
The White House and several surrounding federal buildings were placed under an emergency lockdown on Wednesday after a shooting incident near the presidential residence that left two National Guard members injured.
The situation unfolded in the afternoon and prompted an immediate response from multiple security agencies. According to early reports, the two Guard members were on duty in the vicinity when they were shot by an unidentified gunman. Their exact conditions remain unclear as officials later provided conflicting updates.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey initially announced that the two troops had been killed. However, he later reversed that statement and explained that updated information suggested otherwise.
“We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information,” Governor Morrisey wrote on X.
He added that his office was in close contact with federal authorities as they worked to confirm the facts.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that President Donald Trump had been briefed on the situation from his Mar a Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, where he was staying at the time of the incident.
“The White House is aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation. The President has been briefed,” she said in a statement.
D. C. Metropolitan Police confirmed that a suspect connected to the shooting had been taken into custody shortly after the attack. Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity or a possible motive, and the investigation is ongoing.
For several months, National Guard personnel have been stationed across Washington D. C. as part of President Trump’s increased anti crime program aimed at reducing violent incidents in the nation’s capital.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump condemned the attack and stated that the individual responsible had also sustained serious injuries during the confrontation. He added that both Guard members were in critical condition at separate hospitals and vowed that the suspect would face severe consequences.
Security has since been tightened around the White House area, and federal law enforcement agencies continue to assess the threat level while reviewing surveillance footage and witness accounts. Officials say more information will be released to the public once details are verified.
