Nigerian singer Aituaje Iruobe, popularly known as Waje, has opened up about being overlooked and unacknowledged for her contribution to the 2007 hit song “Do Me” by the now-defunct music duo Psquare.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Honest Bunch podcast, the award-winning vocalist reflected on her early journey in the music industry and the challenges she faced as a young female artist trying to make her mark.
Waje revealed that she lent her voice to the famous track, which became a major hit across Africa, but claimed she received neither financial compensation nor public recognition for her role.
“I sang part of ‘Do Me, I Do You’,” Waje recalled. “I remember walking through Onitsha Market and hearing the song on loudspeakers. I’d tell people that it was my voice, but they’d just look at me and ask, ‘Who are you?’”
Her revelation sparked mixed reactions among fans, with many expressing disappointment that such a talented artist could be sidelined in one of Nigeria’s most iconic songs.
One social media user commented:
“You guys didn’t try at all. You better do the needful and pay her for her contribution.”
Another wrote:
“The Nigerian music industry runs on ‘use and forget.’ Too many legends worked behind the scenes with zero credit.”
While some fans sympathized with her experience, others argued that the collaboration helped give Waje early exposure that later propelled her career.
Despite the setback, Waje has gone on to establish herself as one of Nigeria’s most respected vocalists, with numerous chart-topping singles and awards to her name.
