Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has reaffirmed his mental strength and ability to thrive under pressure, following Nigeria’s emphatic 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon in the ongoing tournament in Morocco.
The Nigerian star, who plays for Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, has faced scrutiny in recent weeks over missed opportunities in front of goal. However, in a video shared on Thursday by sports journalist @iamcalisports, Osimhen addressed the criticism head-on, stressing that mistakes are part of the game and do not shake his confidence.
“Sometimes I score the goal that no one believes, and sometimes I lose the one that people think I’m going to score. But that doesn’t take anything away from me. I always have this mentality,” the striker said, reflecting on his mixed moments during the clash with Gabon.
Osimhen missed two clear chances in the second half, a moment that could have rattled many players. But instead, he expressed belief in his ability to respond positively. He revealed that he immediately acknowledged the slip-ups to his teammates and assured them he would correct it.
“At first, I told them I’m sorry, and I told them I’m going to correct it in extra time. And I’m happy I did it,” he said with a smile.
True to his word, the forward delivered when it mattered most. In extra time, he found the back of the net twice, sealing the win and sending Nigeria confidently into the next round. His goals came after Akor Adams had opened scoring earlier, before a late Gabon equaliser pushed the match into extra time. Chidera Ejuke added another during the extended period, setting the stage for Osimhen’s brace.
Speaking further, Osimhen highlighted the collective effort and strong team spirit within the camp, noting that his success would not be possible without the support and industry of his teammates.
“Kudos to the guys who gave me the assist to score those two goals. I’m happy about the mentality of the team, all of us. We have been fighting together and pushing ourselves,” he said.
He also expressed deep appreciation to Super Eagles supporters worldwide, acknowledging their constant encouragement and passion.
“Thank you to so many Super Eagles fans all over the world who have scored with us and gone through it all with us. This win is also for them,” the striker added.
Looking ahead, Osimhen remained realistic about the challenges Nigeria will face in the next round, warning that the opponents will be tougher. Nonetheless, he assured that the team is ready to fight with everything they have.
“The next round is not going to be easy either. We will give everything to make sure that we go to the final,” he pledged.
With his performance against Gabon, Osimhen once again demonstrated why he remains one of Africa’s most influential attackers not only because of his goals, but also because of his resilience, leadership, and unwavering confidence.
