Popular social media critic Martins Otse, better known as Verydarkman VDM, and well known comedian Freedom Atsepoyi, widely called Mr Jollof, may be facing serious consequences after a physical altercation between the two reportedly broke out aboard a commercial aircraft. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has now stepped into the matter and is demanding full details of what actually transpired during the flight.
The incident came to public attention on Monday morning after several video clips surfaced online showing VDM and Mr Jollof engaging in a heated confrontation that quickly escalated into an exchange of blows. The footage circulated rapidly across X, TikTok and Instagram, with many users expressing shock over the fact that such a fight could occur inside an aircraft, a controlled environment governed by strict safety regulations.
The tension between the two men did not begin on the aircraft. Their rivalry has been ongoing and has been fuelled by months of online clashes. What started as social media jabs intensified when VDM publicly accused Mr Jollof’s wife of being involved with internet fraudsters, a claim that further deepened the animosity between them and sparked heated reactions from both camps.
According to eyewitnesses who claimed to have been on the flight, the confrontation began shortly after passengers settled into their seats. Words were exchanged and attempts by fellow passengers to calm the situation reportedly failed. The situation escalated into physical contact, which prompted alarm among those on board and raised concerns about the potential risk to flight safety.
In response to the viral clips, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has taken an official interest in the matter. Michael Achimugu, the NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, posted on X and called for anyone with credible information to come forward. He requested the name of the airline involved and the date the altercation occurred, stressing that such details are important for the agency to initiate a formal investigation.
Aviation regulations in Nigeria strictly prohibit unruly behaviour aboard aircraft, and passengers found guilty of such conduct can face heavy penalties. These include monetary fines, legal action or temporary and long term flight bans, depending on the severity of the offence and any risk posed to other passengers or crew members.
Industry experts have noted that the NCAA response reflects a growing concern about disruptive behaviour on flights. Any breach of safety regulations, especially a physical fight, is considered a serious offence because it can endanger lives, distract crew members and compromise the security of the aircraft.
As the NCAA prepares to review the incident, there is widespread speculation about the potential sanctions VDM and Mr Jollof could face if they are found guilty of violating aviation rules. Public opinion is currently divided, with some Nigerians condemning both men for their behaviour, while others argue that their long standing feud made the confrontation almost inevitable.
For now, the aviation authority is waiting for more concrete information before proceeding. One thing is clear. The incident has pushed the ongoing feud between VDM and Mr Jollof into a new dimension that may have legal and regulatory consequences far beyond social media drama.
