US Shooting: National Guard Member Dies After Attack Near White House, Trump Confirms

The United States has been thrown into mourning following the death of Sarah Beckstrom, one of the two West Virginia National Guard members shot near the White House on Wednesday. Her death was confirmed by President Donald Trump during a press briefing on Thursday, marking a tragic escalation of the incident that has attracted national attention.

According to authorities, the shooting occurred close to the U.S. capital when Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, allegedly opened fire on the two uniformed Guard members. The attack prompted immediate security lockdowns in parts of Washington, D.C., and sparked renewed debate over national security protocols.

During the briefing, President Trump described Beckstrom as an incredible person, outstanding in every single way. He added that her family was present at the hospital when she passed away. He said she is looking down at us right now, visibly emotional.

The second injured Guard member remains hospitalized and is receiving intensive medical care. Officials have not yet released the individual’s identity, as the family has requested privacy during this difficult time.

Initial statements from federal investigators suggest that the attack was deliberate. President Trump did not hesitate to label the shooting a terrorist attack, sharply criticizing the Biden administration’s immigration policies. He argued that Afghans who previously assisted U.S. forces during the Afghanistan war should have undergone more rigorous security screenings before entering the country.

Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Secret Service, are conducting a joint investigation to understand the suspect’s background, potential motives, and whether he acted alone. Security has also been heightened around the White House and other federal buildings as a precaution.

The incident has intensified political tensions, igniting discussions on border control, veteran protection, and the safety of military personnel stationed in high-risk public areas.

More updates are expected as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the attack.
