United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, has described the ongoing killings of Christians in Nigeria as “genocide wearing the mask of chaos,” a remark that has intensified global attention on the country’s security and religious-violence crisis.
Waltz made the statement on Tuesday during an event hosted by the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. According to Fox News, the forum was convened to address what organisers described as rising persecution and targeted attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria.
The event, which also featured media coverage from international outlets, highlighted the escalating concern among American policymakers, activists and religious-freedom advocates over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
Earlier reports indicated that U.S. rap superstar Nicki Minaj and Ambassador Waltz were expected to headline the UN-focused engagement, following a wave of international reaction to recent killings in Nigeria. The forum was facilitated by political strategist Alex Bruesewitz, marking one of the highest-profile interventions on the issue from American public figures.
Waltz’s comment has added momentum to a growing debate about whether the violence in Nigeria meets the threshold of genocide. Several international rights groups have previously raised alarm about mass killings in parts of the country, especially in the Middle Belt and northern regions.
However, the Nigerian government has consistently rejected the characterisation of the crisis as religious genocide, arguing that communities of different faiths have all been targeted by criminal gangs, terrorists and armed militias.
The renewed U.S. scrutiny comes amid intensified diplomatic conversations on Nigeria’s security challenges, with observers noting that Washington’s latest position may place additional pressure on the Nigerian government to respond decisively.
