Tragedy struck in Aba, Abia State, when two young men lost their lives in a fatal car accident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
The victims, identified as Junior Clifford and Mbika, reportedly died on the spot after their Toyota Camry veered off the road and plunged into a water-logged ditch near the Osisioma Flyover in Aba.
According to eyewitness accounts and confirmation from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the accident occurred around 1:00 a.m., when the vehicle lost control and crashed into the roadside ditch.
It was gathered that the impact of the crash trapped the victims inside the submerged car, preventing immediate rescue efforts. Locals who arrived at the scene said that despite attempts to pull the victims out, the rising water level made rescue operations extremely difficult.
By the time officials of the FRSC arrived, both men had already passed away.
The Abia State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeoma, confirmed the tragic development in a statement to journalists on Tuesday.
She said the FRSC rescue team retrieved the bodies from the wreckage using a crane to lift the vehicle from the ditch.
“The crash occurred at about 1:00 a.m. near the Osisioma flyover. Two male occupants were trapped inside the vehicle, which plunged into a water-logged ditch,” Ezeoma said.
“Their bodies have been deposited at the mortuary, and the vehicle, a Toyota Camry, has been recovered. Preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speed led to the driver losing control.”
Sources at the scene revealed that a third occupant, believed to be a female passenger, was also in the car at the time of the crash. As of the time of filing this report, her body had not been recovered, raising concerns that she may have been swept away by the floodwater in the ditch.
Rescue teams were said to still be conducting search operations in the surrounding area.
The sudden deaths of Clifford and Mbika have thrown their friends and relatives into mourning. Social media posts from acquaintances described the two as “close friends” who were well-known in the community.
Many residents of Aba have also expressed sorrow over the increasing number of road accidents in the area, often linked to speeding and poor road conditions, especially during rainy seasons when drainage systems are overwhelmed.
Meanwhile, the FRSC has once again warned motorists to exercise caution while driving, particularly at night and during wet weather.
Sector Commander Ezeoma urged drivers to obey speed limits and ensure their vehicles are in proper condition before embarking on trips.
She emphasized that excessive speed and reckless driving continue to be the leading causes of fatal crashes across the country.
The FRSC has opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. The agency has also promised to work with local authorities to improve road safety measures around the Osisioma flyover, which has become a known accident spot in recent years.
As of press time, the bodies of Junior Clifford and Mbika remain at the mortuary, while the search continues for the missing female passenger.
