Two male passengers have been confirmed dead following a fatal accident that occurred after the Isiala Ngwa junction along the Enugu, Aba, Port Harcourt Expressway in Abia State on Thursday.
The crash involved a white 18-seater Toyota bus belonging to a popular transport company in the state. According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle was travelling from Umuahia to Aba when one of its tyres suddenly burst while in motion.
The driver reportedly lost control, causing the bus to veer off the road and somersault multiple times before crashing into a nearby bush.
Eyewitnesses and sympathisers quickly gathered at the scene, describing the incident as tragic and preventable. One of them, Chimezie McLawrence, urged commercial drivers to always slow down and ensure their vehicles are properly maintained. He stressed that overspeeding and neglect of tyre conditions have led to many avoidable deaths on Nigerian highways.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, arrived promptly at the scene to rescue survivors and convey them to a nearby hospital. About ten passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
Confirming the incident, the Abia Sector Commander of the FRSC, Ngozi Ezeoma, said, “Yes, two male adults died on the spot.”
The tragic crash occurred not far from the location of another fatal accident in August 2025, which claimed the life of a young child. This has raised fresh concerns about road safety along that section of the expressway.
Authorities have once again appealed to motorists to drive cautiously, particularly during high-speed trips between major cities.
May the souls of the deceased rest in peace, and may the injured recover fully.
