A Russian tourist in Buenos Aires fought back against two suspected phone snatchers on Monday, triggering a dramatic street confrontation that ended with one of the thieves being captured by members of the public. The incident, reported by Metro UK, occurred on November seventeen while thirty three year old Alexandra Doketova was cycling through the Argentine capital.
Alexandra was riding through a busy area when two men on a motorbike approached her from behind. One of the suspects leaned over to snatch her phone, expecting a quick getaway. Instead of releasing her grip, she grabbed the thief’s leg and held on firmly. As the motorbike continued moving, she was dragged along the road. She suffered scrapes and a minor head injury, but she refused to let go.
Her resistance quickly drew the attention of nearby motorists who immediately stepped in. Several drivers slowed down to block the path of the fleeing suspects, creating a barrier that forced the motorbike to lose balance. Within seconds, the thief who had grabbed her phone tumbled onto the road. Passers by rushed forward and restrained him, pinning him down until police officers arrived at the scene.
A short investigation led authorities to the second suspect who was arrested a few hours later in another part of the city. Police later raided the men’s residences, where they recovered ten mobile phones believed to have been stolen in a series of similar street attacks. Officials confirmed that both suspects had previous criminal records.
Despite the evidence against them, a local court decided that the suspects should not be held in custody. The ruling has sparked widespread anger across Buenos Aires. Residents expressed disbelief, particularly as the entire incident was captured on camera. The footage has circulated widely on social media and international news platforms, drawing renewed attention to the growing trend of motorcycle thieves preying on pedestrians and tourists.
The case has intensified public debate about the city’s rising crime levels and the perceived weakness of its judicial system. Many locals argue that stronger legal measures are urgently needed, not only to protect visitors but also to reassure residents who feel increasingly vulnerable. Authorities say investigations into the suspects’ alleged involvement in other thefts are ongoing, as calls grow louder for a tougher response to the wave of daylight robberies affecting the capital.
