The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-East), Mrs Chioma Wesley, has clarified why President Bola Tinubu will not intervene in the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Wesley spoke to State House correspondents after briefing the President at Aso Villa on Thursday. She emphasized that the case is currently in court and that the President cannot make any pronouncement on it. “He abides by the rule of law. So, for now, we wait for the court to make that decision,” she said.
Her comments come amid renewed calls from some groups and individuals for Kanu’s release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). Kanu was first arrested in 2015 over charges related to his leadership of IPOB. He was later granted bail in 2017 but left Nigeria following a military operation in his hometown, Afaraukwu, Abia State.
He was re-arrested abroad and returned to Nigeria in June 2021, where he has remained in DSS custody. The IPOB leader’s trial has drawn national and international attention, with supporters urging the government to intervene and critics insisting that the rule of law must take its course.
Wesley’s statement reinforces the administration’s position that all judicial processes must be respected, highlighting President Tinubu’s commitment to the rule of law even in high-profile cases. She urged the public to remain patient and allow the court to reach a verdict.
