President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers attached to Very Important Persons across Nigeria. This marks a significant shift in the country’s security deployment strategy.
The directive was announced on Sunday by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga. It emerged from a high-level security meeting held with Service Chiefs in Abuja. According to Onanuga, the measure is intended to return the Nigeria Police Force to its core duties and strengthen its presence in communities facing rising insecurity.
Under the new policy, VIPs who require armed escorts must now seek personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. Onanuga stated that VIPs who want police protection will now request well armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
He explained that several remote communities have remained vulnerable because of limited police presence at local stations. This situation has been worsened by the large number of officers assigned to personal protection roles.
To address the manpower gap, President Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers. The Federal Government is also working with state governments to upgrade police training facilities across the country.
The statement added that in view of the current security challenges facing the country, President Tinubu is committed to boosting police presence in all communities.
The security meeting was attended by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director General of the Department of State Services, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
