Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended on Sunday night after the Super Eagles suffered a dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the CAF playoff final.
The match, played with high intensity, saw Nigeria take an early lead in the first half when Frank Onyeka’s effort was deflected into the net. However, the advantage was short-lived, as Mechak Elia capitalised on a defensive error to equalise for the Leopards, beating goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali with a composed finish.
Both teams battled fiercely through regular time and extra time, but neither side could find a winner, leading to a decisive penalty shoot-out.
During the shoot-out, Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon and Semi Ajayi failed to convert their spot-kicks, handing DR Congo a hard-earned victory and the ticket to advance.
With the win, DR Congo progresses to the six-team intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 23 to 31 in 2026, where the final two qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup will be determined.
The defeat means Nigeria will miss the global tournament for the first time since 2006, marking a major setback for the Super Eagles and their supporters.
