The Super Eagles of Nigeria have intensified their preparations for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon, as 21 players have now reported to camp in Rabat, Morocco. The atmosphere in camp is said to be charged with focus and determination as the team looks to secure a place in the next round of the qualifiers.
The squad opened camp on Sunday, with their first full training session taking place on Monday under the supervision of head coach Eric Chelle and his technical staff. Early arrivals included team captain William Troost-Ekong, defenders Calvin Bassey and Benjamin Frederick, as well as key midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and winger Moses Simon were also among the first to hit the training pitch.
Other players who have joined the squad include Tolu Arokodare, Chidozie Awaziem, Chidera Ejuke, Samuel Chukwueze, Olakunle Olusegun, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Zaidu Sanusi, Raphael Onyedika, Frank Onyeka, Semi Ajayi, Akor Adams, Bruno Onyemaechi, Ademola Lookman and goalkeeper Amas Obasogie.
Three additional players, including prolific striker Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray, are expected to arrive before the matchday deadline. Osimhen’s return is eagerly anticipated, with fans hopeful that his presence will boost the team’s attacking strength ahead of the high-stakes clash.
The Super Eagles are riding on a wave of confidence following their impressive 4-0 win over Benin Republic in their last qualifier in October. The team’s morale has been further lifted by their strong defensive record and improved cohesion on the field. Gabon, however, will not be an easy opponent, having recorded a convincing 2-0 victory over Burundi in their final qualifier.
Both sides ended their group campaigns with just one defeat each, setting the stage for a tightly contested encounter. Nigeria’s history against Gabon adds a layer of optimism, as the Super Eagles have never lost to the Panthers in their previous two meetings.
Coach Eric Chelle emphasized discipline and focus during training, noting that every player must be mentally prepared for the challenge ahead. “This is not just another qualifier. It is a defining moment for Nigerian football. We must play with pride, unity and confidence,” a source quoted him as saying.
The stakes are high as the winner of Thursday’s game will move on to face either Cameroon or DR Congo in the final playoff on Sunday. The eventual victor of that tie will book a ticket to the FIFA intercontinental playoff tournament in March 2026, keeping alive their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. local time at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex in Rabat. Fans across Nigeria and the continent are eagerly awaiting what promises to be a thrilling encounter that could define the Super Eagles’ road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
