Speeding Bus Driver Dies in Sagamu Benin Expressway Accident

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE, has confirmed that one person lost his life while two others sustained injuries in a fatal crash that occurred on Saturday along the Sagamu Benin Expressway in Odogbolu Local Government Area of the state.

TRACE Public Relations Officer, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Abeokuta. He said the accident happened around 5:20 p.m. near the Ijebu-Ode Express Trailer Park.

According to Akinbiyi, the crash involved a container-laden truck with registration number KTU 357 XX and a white bus marked DGB 650 XA. Preliminary investigations revealed that excessive speeding by the bus driver led to the collision.

“Eyewitness accounts indicated that the bus driver, while driving at high speed, lost control and rammed into a stationary truck attempting to join the expressway from the trailer park,” Akinbiyi said.

He noted that five people were involved in the crash, two in the truck and three in the bus. Two passengers sustained minor injuries, while the bus driver died on the spot.

The TRACE spokesman added that operatives of TRACE and the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, evacuated the deceased to the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital mortuary, while the injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

He stated that officials of TRACE, FRSC, and the police worked together to clear the wreckage and ease the traffic gridlock caused by the crash.

“The vehicles involved have been towed to the Ijebu-Ode Police Area Command, Igbeba, for further investigation,” Akinbiyi added.

He assured that normal traffic flow was restored shortly after the rescue operation and advised motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and road safety regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.

The Sagamu Benin Expressway has witnessed several accidents in recent years, many of which were attributed to speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, and reckless driving. Authorities have consistently urged commercial and private drivers to exercise caution, especially at busy junctions and near trailer parks, where the risk of collisions is higher.

TRACE officials reiterated that public awareness and strict enforcement of traffic laws remain critical in reducing fatalities on major highways. Motorists were reminded to always observe speed limits, maintain safe distances, and ensure that vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on journeys.
