Sowore Warns Nigerians: “Don’t Celebrate Trump’s Threat of Military Action” Human rights activist and
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has urged Nigerians not to celebrate the recent threat by former US President Donald Trump’s administration to launch a military invasion in Nigeria.
The warning follows Trump’s reported statement that the US military would intervene if the Nigerian government fails to address the alleged massacre and persecution of Christians in the country.
The comment has since sparked mixed reactions across Nigeria. While some stakeholders particularly from Christian communities see the warning as a welcome move to defend religious freedom, others have voiced concerns about foreign interference and the possible consequences of such an action.
Sowore, in a statement released on Sunday, described Trump’s remarks as reckless and dangerous, arguing that Nigeria’s problems cannot and should not be solved by foreign powers or external military force.
“The latest threat by US President Donald Trump to launch military action in Nigeria, allegedly to protect Christians, may sound appealing to some. Still, history has shown this to be perilous,” Sowore said.
“Whether you are Christian, Muslim, animist, or non-religious, no one should celebrate such rhetoric. The United States and its allies have a long record of military interventions that leave nations more unstable than before.”
He cited Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria as examples of how U.S.-led military interventions often leave nations more divided and vulnerable than before.
Sowore emphasized that Nigeria’s deliverance “will never come from abroad,” insisting that the country’s redemption must come from within through real leadership, national renewal, and justice for all citizens.
“What Nigeria truly needs is not a foreign savior but legitimate and accountable leadership that protects all citizens, upholds justice, and ends the cycles of corruption and violence that have left the nation broken,” he added.
