The growing wave of kidnappings in Edo State has taken a frightening turn as a pregnant woman and her husband were abducted late Monday evening and remain in captivity, with their captors demanding a hefty ransom, according to Daily Post.
Family members said the couple was taken between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., shortly after returning home. Footage from the scene reportedly shows footprints around their residence and a black SUV believed to have been used in the abduction.
Relatives revealed that the kidnappers have subjected the victims to severe physical abuse, including repeated beatings, and have denied them food since their capture. The abductors are now demanding ₦50 million for the couple’s release, an amount far beyond the family’s reach. Desperate to secure their freedom, relatives have managed to gather ₦7 million through personal contributions and community goodwill. They have also publicly shared bank details to solicit additional donations, hoping wider support can help secure the couple’s release before their condition deteriorates further.
The emotional weight of the crisis is compounded by the wife’s delicate state. She is pregnant, an HND student at Auchi Polytechnic, and also runs a small fashion design business to support her education and home. Her abduction has sparked outrage on social media, with many describing the situation as a tragic example of how deeply insecurity is affecting ordinary citizens trying to survive, study, and build modest livelihoods.
Family members have issued urgent appeals to authorities, calling on Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, the state police command, local vigilante networks, and federal security agencies to intervene swiftly. They warn that time is running out, especially considering the couple’s deteriorating health and the wife’s vulnerability. Prolonged captivity and poor treatment could lead to irreversible harm if immediate action is not taken.
