Operatives of the Kwara State Police Command have foiled a planned robbery and murder attempt in Ilorin, the state capital, following a carefully coordinated operation that led to the arrest of a prime suspect. The incident, which could have resulted in the loss of an innocent life, has drawn commendation from security officials and renewed calls for public vigilance.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, officers acted promptly after receiving intelligence that a resident of the Gerewu area, Abdulazeez Ishaq, had been targeted for assassination. The police spokesperson explained that the plot came to light when Ishaq reported that a man he knew, Adekoya Opeyemi, also known as Justice, had confessed to being contracted to kill him and steal his vehicle, a Honda Accord 2013 model.
SP Adeyemi stated, “On 10 November 2025, one Abdulazeez Ishaq of Gerewu, Ilorin, reported that Adekoya Opeyemi, also known as Justice, confessed he was contracted by one Abdulwahab Ahmad to kill him and steal his Honda Accord, 2013 model.”
According to the police report, Ahmad allegedly instructed Opeyemi to subdue Ishaq, bind him, lock him inside the boot of his own vehicle, and drive him to the Unity area of Ilorin. From there, Ahmad planned to take possession of the car and travel to Ibadan with the victim still trapped inside. The method suggested a deliberate and calculated attempt to commit murder while concealing the crime.
Realising the gravity of the situation, officers of the command devised a tactical plan to save the victim and apprehend the suspect without endangering the public. Ishaq was asked to cooperate with the suspect so that the police could monitor the planned meeting point. With surveillance teams positioned strategically, the operation proceeded smoothly.
SP Adeyemi said, “In a tactically coordinated operation, operatives of the command advised the complainant to play along while surveillance was mounted. The suspect was swiftly arrested at the agreed location as he attempted to take possession of the car, thereby foiling the planned robbery and murder.”
The police described the operation as a demonstration of effective teamwork, swift intelligence gathering, and strategic execution. The successful intervention not only saved the life of the intended victim but also prevented the suspects from fleeing with the stolen vehicle.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, expressed admiration for the officers involved, praising their professionalism, precision, and dedication to duty. He urged members of the public to remain alert, to report suspicious activities promptly, and to continue to support the efforts of the police command in its ongoing fight against criminal elements in the state.
The Commissioner further applauded the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for his visionary leadership and consistent support of operational reforms. According to him, the IGP’s commitment to strengthening intelligence driven policing has continued to enhance tactical efficiency, leading to notable successes in crime prevention and rapid response operations across Nigeria.
Security analysts say the foiled attack serves as a reminder of the importance of community policing and timely information sharing. As crime patterns evolve, coordinated responses between residents and law enforcement agencies remain crucial in preventing similar incidents.
