The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man, Gandonu Lowe, for allegedly attempting to escape his community with the corpse of his wife. The body had been tied to a motorcycle and concealed inside a sack. The incident occurred in Omolende Village in the Yewa South Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police, the suspect was intercepted on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at about 1.05 p.m. after the Divisional Police Officer of the Ilaro Division received credible information that a man was transporting a suspicious load believed to be a corpse. Acting on the tip, officers carried out a strategic stop and search operation, during which Lowe was stopped for inspection.
During the search, officers untied the sack attached to the back of the motorcycle. They discovered that it contained the body of an adult female, later identified as the suspect’s wife. Police reports indicated that the body had visible marks of violence, including deep injuries around the neck and significant bleeding, which suggested that the woman may have been murdered.
CSP Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed that a blood stained cutlass believed to have been used during the attack was recovered at the scene. She added that the suspect appeared to be attempting to flee the community to avoid being caught.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody, and the remains of the deceased were moved to the State Morgue in Ilaro for preservation and autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, commended the anonymous informant whose timely report made the arrest possible. He encouraged residents to remain alert and to continue providing credible information, noting that even minor details can prevent crime and save lives. He also restated the command’s commitment to pursuing justice in cases of domestic and gender based violence.
The incident has triggered concern among residents of Omolende Village. Many expressed shock over the gruesome discovery and called for a thorough investigation to uncover what led to the woman’s death.
In a related case reported in November 2022, PUNCH Online documented another domestic tragedy in Lagos. A man identified as Akpos allegedly set his wife, Risikat, on fire during an argument. He reportedly poured petrol on her and ignited the flames, after which he fled the scene. The repeated occurrence of such incidents has renewed public calls for stronger measures to address domestic violence across the country.
