India is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic and beloved film personalities, Dharmendra, who passed away at the age of 89 in Mumbai. The veteran actor, affectionately known as India’s “He Man” and “Dharam Paaji,” leaves behind a legacy that spans more than six decades and includes some of the most celebrated films in Bollywood history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, calling Dharmendra’s passing “the end of an era in Indian cinema.” In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Modi praised the actor’s remarkable versatility and the emotional warmth he brought to every role. He highlighted Dharmendra’s ability to shift effortlessly between intense drama, romantic charm, and natural comedy. These qualities made him one of the most loved actors across several generations.

Modi added that beyond the screen, Dharmendra was admired for his humility and modest nature. “His presence lit up cinema halls for decades,” the Prime Minister wrote. He stated that Dharmendra’s contribution to Indian culture would remain timeless.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also offered condolences and described Dharmendra as a precious star who ruled the hearts of millions. Kharge noted that the actor’s simple lifestyle, despite his enormous fame, inspired many people in the industry. He said the loss marks the end of an important chapter in the history of Indian cinema.

Leaders and Film Personalities Remember a Legend

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep sadness at the actor’s death. She said Dharmendra was a legendary actor hero whose larger than life presence shaped the golden era of Bollywood. She added that his films continue to inspire younger generations of actors and filmmakers.

The film industry has been deeply affected by the news of his passing. Filmmaker Karan Johar, who directed Dharmendra in the 2023 film Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani, shared an emotional message online. He recalled the actor’s gentle nature, dedication, and positive attitude on set. Johar described working with Dharmendra as a blessing and said his absence leaves a space that cannot be filled.

Actress Kajol remembered him as the original good man of Bollywood. She said he possessed a kindness that made everyone around him feel valued. She stated that the world feels emptier without him. Kajol had worked with Dharmendra in the films Jab Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya and Taaqat.


Actor Ajay Devgn said he was heartbroken to hear of Dharmendra’s passing. He praised his generosity and the powerful influence he had on future generations of actors. Devgn said Indian cinema has lost a true legend whose spirit and passion shaped the dreams of thousands.

Dharmendra began his journey in Indian cinema with the 1960 film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. His rise to stardom was swift and impressive. His strong screen presence, natural acting style, and effortless charm made him one of Bollywood’s most successful and admired actors.

His partnership with Amitabh Bachchan in the classic film Sholay remains one of the most iconic collaborations in Indian cinema. His portrayal of the lovable and daring Veeru became instantly memorable. The film continues to be celebrated as a cultural landmark.

Throughout his career, Dharmendra delivered outstanding performances in films such as Phool Aur Patthar, Yaadon Ki Baarat, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Naukar Biwi Ka, Chupke Chupke, Betaab, and Ghayal. His ability to excel in action, romance, comedy, and drama set him apart as a truly versatile actor.

A Family of Stars and a Lasting Legacy

Dharmendra is survived by his wife Hema Malini and his children, actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol, and Ahana Deol. He is also survived by his daughters Ajeeta and Vijeta. Many members of the Deol family went on to become respected figures in the film industry, adding to his legacy.
