Physically-Challenged Widower and Children Escape Death as Fire Destroys N40 Million Property in Ebonyi
A devastating late-night fire has left a physically challenged widower, Mr. Michael Emeliike, and his children homeless after it destroyed their six-room apartment valued at over N40 million in Nchoko, Ndechi community of Izzi Local Government Area, Ebonyi State. The fire erupted around 10 p.m. on November 3, catching the family by surprise while Mr. Emeliike was asleep.
According to eyewitnesses and family members, the blaze spread rapidly, destroying all belongings, including furniture, appliances, clothing, and food items. The family’s home, built just three years ago by Mr. Emeliike and his late wife, was reduced to ashes.
Eyewitnesses and relatives have raised suspicions that the fire may have been deliberately set. Mr. Stanley Nwoga, a relative and Director of Works in Abakaliki, dismissed the possibility of an electrical fault, noting that the property had no electricity at the time due to an unpaid bill. He alleged that markings inside the rooms suggest that flammable substances may have been poured prior to ignition.
Mr. Emeliike, who is hard of hearing, recounted being abruptly awakened by loud bangs at his window and being dragged to safety by two unidentified men as the roof began to collapse. His son, Monday, who had stepped out briefly, returned to see flames engulfing the building. Attempts to salvage belongings proved futile. A neighbour, Joseph Nwedu, broke through an iron door to rescue Mr. Emeliike, emphasizing that without such intervention, the family could have perished.
The family is now forced to sleep in a small poultry structure that previously housed chickens, exposing them to heat, mosquitoes, and unsafe living conditions. Reverend Remy Olukamma described the incident as “wickedness of the highest order” and appealed for urgent intervention from the government and humanitarian organizations. He also called for the decentralization of fire service stations in Ebonyi State to ensure rapid responses to emergencies in rural communities.
The Emeliike family has appealed to the Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), state government, NGOs, churches, and private individuals to assist them in rebuilding their home.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, but tension remains high in the Nchoko community, with residents fearing that the blaze may have been part of a deliberate attack, prompting renewed calls for vigilance and enhanced security.
