Nollywood actor Ime Bishop Umoh, popularly known as Okon Lagos, has urged President Bola Tinubu to consider granting clemency to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, following his recent conviction and life sentence.
According to a report. Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on all seven terrorism-related charges brought by the Federal Government. The court held that the prosecution’s evidence against him was compelling and remained unchallenged.
The sentencing breakdown showed that Kanu received life imprisonment on counts 1, 4, 5, and 6. He was also handed twenty years imprisonment without an option of fine on count 3, and five years without an option of fine on count 7.
Reacting to the development, Okon Lagos stated that the judgment was expected, but added that the Federal Government should now explore political reconciliation. He argued that if repentant terrorists from the northern region could be granted pardon in the past, a similar gesture could be extended to Kanu in the interest of national unity.
He said, “This is not surprising. Nnamdi Kanu’s sentence was expected. Now that the conviction has been delivered, can we focus on the next pressing issue: a political solution through clemency or a state pardon? If repentant terrorists from the North can be pardoned, why can a similar gesture not be granted to Kanu? Clemency or a state pardon will not invalidate or override the verdict, but it may help bring lasting peace.”
Okon Lagos emphasised that such a move could help calm tensions, heal divisions, and promote dialogue in the South East, where Kanu’s detention has remained a major source of unrest.
The sentencing has continued to generate nationwide reactions, with political figures, activists, and civil society groups expressing contrasting views on the court’s decision and the possibility of a political resolution.
