Former Super Eagles captain Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha has expressed concern over the current state of the national team, claiming that the squad has lost its fear factor on the international stage.
Okocha shared his observations while appearing on The Exchange with Femi Soneye, reflecting on Nigeria’s once-dominant presence in African football. “In our home, back then, there were no questions; no matter who you were, it was a matter of how many,” he said. “So, we made our home our fortress, but now, it is like we are weaker at home. We have lost that fear factor. Nations used to be scared to play against Nigeria. Now, people want to play against us.”
The former midfield maestro’s remarks come ahead of Nigeria’s crucial World Cup 2026 playoff clash against Gabon, a game that will determine the team’s fate in the qualification process. The Super Eagles only managed to progress as one of the best runners-up in the Africa zone, following a qualifying campaign marked by inconsistency and uneven performances.
Okocha highlighted the importance of mental strength and home advantage in international competitions. According to him, teams that once feared Nigeria now approach matches with confidence, a shift that could impact the Eagles’ performance in high-stakes encounters.
The comments have reignited discussions among fans and analysts about the need for the Super Eagles to reclaim their dominance both at home and abroad. As Nigeria prepares for the playoffs, Okocha’s warning serves as a reminder that reputation and fear on the pitch must be earned through consistent performance, tactical discipline, and strong leadership.
