Aloy Ejimakor, former lawyer and consultant to Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, visited the incarcerated IPOB leader at the Sokoto Correctional Centre on Wednesday. He was accompanied by Kanu’s brother, Emmanuel Kanu, and Kanu’s wife.
Ejimakor shared a photograph of the visit on Facebook, calling on the Igbo people to remain committed to efforts to secure Kanu’s release. In his post, he wrote, “I just arrived Sokoto with Prince Emmanuel Kanu and his wife to have a visitation with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Ndigbo must vigorously rise to the urgent task of freeing #MNK from this ordeal and injustice that reflects on all of us.”
The visit comes less than 48 hours after the South-East Caucus in the House of Representatives formally petitioned President Bola Tinubu, seeking a presidential pardon for the convicted IPOB leader. The lawmakers emphasized the importance of dialogue and peaceful resolution in addressing the issues surrounding Kanu’s imprisonment.
Kanu was sentenced on November 20 by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, to life imprisonment on seven counts of terrorism. The charges were linked to his secessionist campaigns, which aimed at disintegrating the South-East, South-South, and parts of the Middle Belt from Nigeria.
Kanu’s legal and political challenges trace back to 2015, when he was first arrested and arraigned on 15 counts, including treasonable felony, terrorism, criminal conspiracy, intimidation, and membership of an unlawful organisation. He was granted bail in 2017 on health grounds but fled to the United Kingdom following a military operation at his family home in Abia State.
He was later arrested abroad and extradited to Nigeria from Kenya in 2021 following coordinated diplomatic efforts. Since then, he had been held in the custody of the Department of State Services, until his conviction last week, after which he was transferred to the Sokoto Correctional Centre to serve his life sentence.
Observers note that the visitation by Ejimakor, Kanu’s wife, and brother may signal continued efforts by supporters and family members to maintain dialogue and appeal for clemency. The incident also comes amid heightened calls from political and civil society actors in the South-East for the Nigerian government to find a peaceful resolution to the issues surrounding Kanu and IPOB’s activities.
