A UK-based Nigerian content creator has come under heavy criticism after posting a video of himself eating pounded yam and soup with his bare hands while standing on London Bridge.
The clip, which shows him calmly moulding and eating the traditional meal against the backdrop of the city skyline, quickly went viral and sparked a heated debate online.
What some viewers perceived as cultural pride or creative expression was condemned by many Nigerians in the diaspora, who argued that the act was inappropriate for a public setting and reinforced negative stereotypes.
One X user, @Sikowitz17, wrote, “Something you cannot do in Oshodi, you’ll bring here. It is unhygienic, stupid, and does not make any sense.”
The backlash intensified as more commenters accused the content creator of portraying Africans in an unflattering light, particularly in countries where public behaviour is often scrutinised.
Others questioned whether cultural expression should extend to practices that may be considered indecent, unhygienic, or out of place in global public spaces.
The incident has revived ongoing debates within the Nigerian diaspora about public etiquette, cultural responsibility, and how actions by individuals abroad can shape broader perceptions of Africans on the world stage.
