Nigerian Lady Leaves Catholicism for Islam, Explains Meaning Behind Her New Name

A Nigerian lady has drawn significant attention on social media after announcing her decision to leave Catholicism for Islam and revealing the meaning behind her new name.

The lady, known on TikTok as @Maryam Kenechi, shared her excitement about embracing Islam, noting that she has found a deeper sense of faith since her conversion. Her post, which has generated widespread reactions, highlighted the connection between her former name and her new Islamic name.

According to her, her birth name, Mary, and her new name, Maryam, share the same meaning. She explained that Mary is the English form, while Maryam is the Arabic variant. Because of this, she said she is comfortable being addressed by either name.

“I don’t just accept Islam and change my name,” she wrote. “My name is Ugwu Kenechi Modesta Mary. When I accepted Islam, I found out that Mary and Maryam have the same meaning and are the same name. One is English, which is Mary, and Maryam is Arabic. So you see, you can call me Maryam or Mary. All na same.”

She also emphasised her identity as an Igbo Muslimah from a Christian home who discovered her faith in Islam.

Although she did not share the circumstances surrounding her conversion, her comment section was filled with mixed reactions from TikTok users, with some expressing support and others sharing their views on her decision.
