Niger Republic Suffers Another Deadly Blow as 21 Security Officers Reportedly Killed in Jihadist Attack
Niger Republic has suffered yet another major security setback following a deadly raid on a Gendarmerie Camp in Garbougna, where no fewer than 21 security personnel were reportedly killed by armed militants believed to be jihadists.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama revealed the incident in a detailed update shared on his X handle. According to him, the attack took place in the early hours of Friday, when the camp came under heavy assault.
The latest incident occurred barely 48 hours after fighters belonging to the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara killed 17 soldiers of the Nigerien Army in the same Garbougna area, located along the Terra to Niamey route. The back-to-back attacks have heightened concerns about the rising activities of extremist groups operating across the Sahel region.
Makama noted that preliminary intelligence suggests the attackers are linked to established Sahel-based extremist networks that have intensified operations in recent months. They reportedly stormed the Gendarmerie Camp in large numbers, catching the security personnel off guard and overpowering them during the intense confrontation.
Citing security sources, Makama added that the insurgents fled with several operational vehicles and made away with a significant cache of arms and ammunition that had been stored within the camp. The magnitude of the loss has prompted urgent calls for reinforced security measures in vulnerable border communities.
“The situation is dire. The Garbougna gendarmerie post was overrun, and dozens of weapons and vehicles were taken. The number of casualties is still being compiled, but more than 21 gendarmes are feared killed,” one security source said.
Local authorities are expected to conduct a full assessment of the attack as the country continues to struggle with escalating security challenges posed by armed groups entrenched in the region.
