Nicki Minaj Faces Backlash After Thanking Donald Trump for Threatening Military Action Against Nigeria
American rapper Nicki Minaj has come under fire after thanking former U.S. President Donald Trump for threatening military action against Nigeria, following his claims that Christians in the West African nation were being “slaughtered.”
Trump, 79, made the statement on Truth Social over the weekend, alleging that “radical Islamists” were responsible for mass killings of Christians. He announced that Nigeria would be designated a “Country of Particular Concern” and warned that the U.S. could intervene militarily if the attacks continued.
“When Christians, or any such group, are slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria, something must be done,” Trump wrote. “The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening... We stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world.”
The former president also threatened to cut off aid to Nigeria, saying the U.S. might “go in, guns blazing, to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists” responsible for the violence.
Shortly after Trump’s post, Nicki Minaj, 42, shared a screenshot on X (formerly Twitter) and expressed gratitude to Trump and his team for “taking the issue seriously.”
“Reading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude,” Minaj wrote. “No group should ever be persecuted for practicing their religion. We don’t have to share the same beliefs in order to respect each other... Thank you to The President & his team for taking this seriously.”
Her post quickly drew backlash from some fans, who accused her of overlooking Trump’s controversial stance on LGBTQ+ rights. One fan commented that the U.S. government was “weaponizing religion so your gay fans can be silenced.”
In response, Minaj — in a since-deleted post — fired back:
“Imagine hearing that Christians are being MURDERED & making it about you being gay,” she wrote. “Expecting someone to stay oppressed, abused, targeted, harassed & consistently ignored by public figures says more about you than it does anyone else.”
Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has since dismissed Trump’s comments, stating that the portrayal of Nigeria as religiously intolerant “does not reflect our national reality.”
“Both Christians and Muslims have suffered attacks from radical groups,” Tinubu said in a statement, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding freedom of religion for all citizens.
The controversy continues to trend online, with fans divided over Minaj’s remarks — some applauding her for speaking up for persecuted Christians, while others criticized her for aligning herself with Trump’s rhetoric.
