Nicki Minaj Addresses UN and Calls for Urgent Action on Alleged Persecution of Christians in Nigeria
Trinidadian American rapper Nicki Minaj delivered a strongly worded speech at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday, November 18, addressing allegations of widespread persecution and killings of Christians in Nigeria.
Minaj appeared alongside United States Ambassador Mike Waltz at a conference focused on religious freedom. Dressed in a black form-fitting gown, the award-winning rapper opened her remarks by admitting she felt nervous, before expressing gratitude to Ambassador Waltz and former United States President Donald Trump for drawing attention to what she described as a growing crisis.
“Thank you, Ambassador Waltz, for this invitation. It is an honor to stand on this stage with you to shine a spotlight on the deadly threat faced by thousands of Christians in Nigeria,” Minaj said. She further thanked President Trump for prioritizing this issue and calling for urgent action to defend Christians in Nigeria.
Minaj emphasized that her global experiences through music have exposed her to different cultures and beliefs, reinforcing her belief in the universal importance of religious freedom. She told the audience that such freedom allows people to sing their faith regardless of identity or geography, but warned that faith is under attack in many places.
Speaking directly about Nigeria, Minaj alleged that Christians in several regions are being targeted, displaced, and killed. She claimed that churches have been burned, families separated, and communities left to live in constant fear simply because of how they pray. She insisted that addressing the situation should not be seen as choosing sides, but as a humanitarian duty.
“Protecting Christians in Nigeria is not about dividing people. It is about uniting humanity,” she said.
In her speech, Minaj also acknowledged her large Nigerian fanbase, known as The Barbz, praising their long-standing support and expressing enthusiasm about visiting the country in the future. She addressed recent backlash over her public support of President Trump, stating that her stance is rooted in principles of justice rather than politics.
Minaj concluded with a firm message. “This is not about taking sides. This is about standing up in the face of injustice. It is what I have always stood for, and I will continue to stand for that for the rest of my life.”
Her appearance at the United Nations comes weeks after she publicly supported a message shared by President Trump on Truth Social, where he warned that Nigeria could be added to the United States list of Countries of Particular Concern if attacks on Christians continued. He stated that the United States might halt aid or take action against extremist groups responsible for the violence.
Her remarks have sparked widespread discussion across diplomatic, political, and entertainment circles, drawing renewed global attention to concerns over religious violence in Nigeria.
