Authorities in China’s southwestern Sichuan Province have confirmed the collapse of a recently opened bridge on Tuesday, November 11. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
The incident occurred along a national highway that connects China’s heartland with Tibet. According to officials, the 758-metre-long Hongqi Bridge in the city of Maerkang had been closed to all traffic on Monday afternoon, following the discovery of cracks on nearby slopes and roads.
Police said shifting mountain terrain had raised serious safety concerns, prompting the precautionary closure.
By Tuesday afternoon, conditions on the mountainside worsened as landslides struck the area. These events ultimately led to the collapse of the approach bridge and its roadbed.
Construction of the Hongqi Bridge had been completed earlier this year, according to a video posted by its contractor, Sichuan Road and Bridge Group.
