Nigerian comedian Freedom Okpetoritse Atsepoyi, popularly known as Mr Jollof, has given his account of the physical altercation between him and social media critic Martins Otese, widely known as VeryDarkMan, during a flight on Monday, November 17.
The incident, which occurred aboard a United Nigeria Airlines aircraft, caused a stir among passengers and quickly went viral after clips of the confrontation surfaced on social media.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, Mr Jollof issued a public apology to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, United Nigeria Airlines, his employer, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his wife, his children, passengers on the flight, and Nigerians at large. He admitted that the incident was unbecoming but insisted that he acted in self defence.
“I want to sincerely apologise to the NCAA, United Nigeria Airlines, and the passengers that boarded the airline. I was only defending myself. I am very sorry if I delayed your appointment. This is not my kind of person, and it will never happen again,” he said.
The comedian also apologised to his family and his boss, noting that the incident did not represent his character. “To my lovely wife, I know you are proud of me. To my kids, I am sorry. Daddy will never do this again. To my boss, I am very sorry. This is not my kind of person,” he added.
Speaking on the cause of the altercation, Mr Jollof alleged that VeryDarkMan approached him inside the aircraft and began making provocative and threatening remarks. According to him, the social media critic repeatedly told him, “If we come down from this plane, I will slap you. Make God punish your father. I can stand up from here now and slap you.”
Mr Jollof said he initially cautioned him to behave yourself, but VeryDarkMan later walked toward him aggressively, prompting him to defend himself. During the ensuing scuffle, he claimed that “3000 mg of blows” were exchanged.
Explaining why he bit VeryDarkMan on the chest during the fight, the comedian said he simply used whatever means were available to protect himself. “Mike Tyson the fighter used what God gave him. When you carry a knife to a gun battle, anything you see you will take it,” he stated.
Aviation authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the in flight altercation. The incident has sparked widespread reactions online, and many Nigerians are calling for stricter sanctions against unruly behaviour aboard aircraft.
