Hollywood veteran Morgan Freeman has expressed strong disapproval over the use of artificial intelligence to recreate his iconic voice, describing it as “robbery.”
The actor, best known for his roles in The Shawshank Redemption and March of the Penguins, said using AI to mimic his voice without consent is equivalent to stealing his work.
In an interview with The Guardian, Freeman stated, “I’m like any other actor. Don’t mimic me with falseness. I get paid for doing stuff like that, so if you’re gonna do it without me, you’re robbing me.”
He revealed that his lawyers have been “very, very busy” handling multiple cases involving the unauthorised cloning of his voice.
Freeman also criticised the increasing use of AI-generated actors in Hollywood, calling it a threat to real creatives. “Nobody likes her because she’s not real, and that takes the part of a real person,” he said, referring to a virtual AI actress currently being promoted in the industry.
The Oscar-winning actor went on to thank his fans for helping him identify and report fake AI imitations of his voice last year, noting that their vigilance helps protect authenticity and integrity in the entertainment world.
Freeman joins other Hollywood stars, including Scarlett Johansson and Emma Thompson, in voicing concerns over AI’s growing influence in acting and filmmaking.
