The family of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has barred his widow, Wunmi, from using their surname until a DNA test confirms the paternity of her son, Liam.
The decision follows an ongoing dispute surrounding the child’s paternity, which intensified after Mohbad’s controversial death on September 12, 2023.
In an official statement jointly signed by the family head, Omolayo Aloba, and Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, the family argued that Wunmi was never legally married to the late singer. They stated that no statutory or customary marriage rites were completed.
“For the avoidance of doubt, no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo, as the required Yoruba traditional rites, including the payment of bride price, were never completed,” the family said.
The family insisted that Wunmi must stop using the Aloba name until the DNA test establishes Liam’s biological ties to Mohbad.
The Aloba family also appointed Oladayo Ogungbe as their sole legal representative for all matters concerning the DNA test and the administration of Mohbad’s estate.
Meanwhile, legal practitioner Wahab Shittu will continue to represent the family on all issues relating to the investigation of Mohbad’s death.
According to the statement, both Liam and his mother will be included in the estate administration process only after the DNA test confirms the late singer as the child’s father.
Mohbad died after receiving an injection administered by an auxiliary nurse, sparking nationwide outrage and calls for a thorough investigation. His body was later exhumed for an autopsy.
However, in May 2025, pathologists announced that the cause of death could not be established, further deepening the controversy surrounding the case.
