A Nigerian man living in New Orleans, United States, has been taken into police custody after allegedly stabbing his father to death and injuring his two sisters in a late night domestic incident that has left the Nigerian community in shock.
The suspect, 29 year old Chukwuebuka Eweni, is facing one count of second degree murder and two counts of attempted second degree murder. Authorities confirmed that the stabbings took place on Tuesday night at a residence on Pebble Drive in New Orleans East.
The victim, 75 year old Samuel Eweni, was a long serving computer science professor at Southern University at New Orleans. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders transported the two women involved in the attack to a nearby hospital. One has since been discharged, while the other remains under medical supervision but is expected to recover.
According to reports from United States media outlets, family members revealed that Chukwuebuka had been battling mental health issues for many years. They said he had never been known to act violently and described the hours before the attack as regular and uneventful. Relatives added that they are still struggling to understand what might have triggered the sudden outburst.
After the incident, the suspect reportedly left the family home and went to New Orleans East Hospital. It was a facility where he frequently sought mental health support. Staff at the hospital, unaware of the crime, transferred him to another facility in Jefferson Parish. Police tracked him down there and arrested him on Wednesday morning.
The New Orleans Police Department has launched a full investigation into the case. This includes an examination of the suspect’s mental health history and the circumstances surrounding the attack. Officials have not released information on the possible motive, and the case is expected to move to court soon.
Southern University at New Orleans has released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the death of Professor Eweni. Chancellor Joseph Bouie Jr described the late academic as a dedicated educator, a mentor, and a respected member of the university community. He noted that Samuel Eweni’s decades of service and his commitment to shaping the lives of students would remain an important part of the institution’s legacy. He extended sympathy to the bereaved family and urged the community to keep them in their thoughts during this difficult period.
Members of the Nigerian diaspora in New Orleans have also expressed shock at the incident. Community leaders described it as tragic and deeply unsettling. They called for greater attention to mental health challenges faced by immigrants adjusting to life abroad and encouraged support for the affected family.
Police say the investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
