A 30-year-old man, Toheeb Ganiyu, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, for allegedly keeping a friend’s gun in his office.
Ganiyu, whose residential address was not provided in court, was charged with being an accessory after the fact. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Insp. Olalekan Adegbite, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in 2024 at the Atipe area of Ibadan.
According to Adegbite, Ganiyu allowed one Olaoluwa Ogungbade, also known as Akube, who was allegedly a member of the Aiye confraternity, to store a gun in his office. The prosecutor further alleged that the defendant knew Ogungbade was a suspected cultist but chose not to report the matter to the police or any other appropriate authority.
Adegbite added that the act amounted to aiding or abetting criminal activity and violated Section 520 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000, which prescribes penalties for being an accessory after the fact.
During the court proceedings, Magistrate Kausarat Ayofe granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦200,000, with one surety in like sum. She ordered that the surety must be a close relative of the defendant and must also be gainfully employed to ensure the bail conditions are credible.
Magistrate Ayofe emphasized the importance of adhering to the bail terms and warned that failure to comply could result in the revocation of bail.
The case was adjourned until January 26, 2026, for further hearing.
The prosecution of Ganiyu underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies and the judiciary in Oyo State to clamp down on cult-related activities and illegal possession of firearms within the state.
