A 25-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly slashing his 23-year-old wife’s nose with a shaving blade in a shocking act of domestic violence in Jhabua district, Madhya Pradesh. The attack, police said, was triggered by the husband’s suspicion about his wife’s character, leaving her severely injured and requiring reconstructive surgery.
According to Ranapur police station in-charge Dinesh Rawat, the couple had been working in a factory in neighboring Gujarat for the past five months. They had returned to their native village on Tuesday, along with their six-year-old son. During an argument at home, the husband, suspecting that his wife was in contact with a migrant worker from the factory, allegedly attacked her in a fit of rage.
“The accused confessed during interrogation that he wanted to teach his wife a lesson by cutting off her nose,” Rawat said, adding that the act was deliberate and premeditated.
The woman suffered grievous injuries, with approximately 50 percent of her nose being severed in the attack. Despite the severity of the wound, she was promptly taken to a nearby hospital by her husband. Civil Surgeon Dr. ML Malviya confirmed that the woman is out of danger, but has been advised to undergo plastic surgery to reconstruct her damaged nose.
Police conducted multiple inspections of the crime scene, but were unable to locate the severed part of the nose. “We suspect that dogs or wild animals may have consumed it during the night,” Rawat explained.
Following the attack, the accused was arrested and produced before a local court, which sent him to judicial custody under applicable sections for grievous injury and domestic violence. Investigators said the case highlights the dangers of violence fueled by mistrust and suspicion in marital relationships.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, sparking conversations about domestic abuse and the urgent need for awareness and protection for women in rural areas. Experts say that such violent acts often go unreported due to societal pressures, fear, and the stigma attached to speaking out.
Local authorities have urged families to seek help from law enforcement or support organizations if they face domestic disputes. “Domestic violence, regardless of the reason, is a criminal act. Suspicions or misunderstandings should never escalate to physical harm,” Rawat emphasized.
This case is one among many in Madhya Pradesh and across India, where women face violence at the hands of their partners. Social activists say stronger community support systems and awareness campaigns are essential to prevent such tragedies and protect vulnerable individuals.
The woman’s family is now focusing on her recovery, both physically and emotionally, as authorities continue their investigation. Meanwhile, the accused remains in judicial custody as the legal process unfolds.
