A tragic incident occurred during a worship service at a Zion Christian Church congregation in Masvingo, Zimbabwe, after a man allegedly killed his fellow church member with a wooden log.
The victim, 23 year old Emmanuel Shanganai, died instantly on November 9, 2025, after he was struck by 33 year old Sam Togara, who is also his neighbour.
According to witnesses, a dispute broke out between the two men while congregants were singing hymns. The argument quickly escalated, and Togara reportedly picked up a heavy wooden log and struck Shanganai with force. The victim collapsed immediately while worshippers watched in shock as the service came to an abrupt halt.
Emergency services arrived at the scene but Shanganai was pronounced dead. His body was taken to Ndanga Hospital for a post mortem examination.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the arrest of Togara, who is currently assisting investigators. He condemned the violent act and urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully, especially in places of worship.
“We have arrested Sam Togara who is suspected of killing Emmanuel Shanganai during a church service. He is assisting with investigations,” Dhewa said. “We urge members of the public to stop solving their problems through violence. Do not turn prayer meetings into boxing matches.”
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident.
