Lady Loses Mother One Hour After Her Matriculation Ceremony in Delta State

A day meant to mark a major milestone in a young woman's academic journey ended in tragedy after a new student of the University of Delta in Agbor lost her mother just one hour after her matriculation ceremony. The heartbreaking story, shared on TikTok by the user @prettyro14, has drawn widespread sympathy and emotional reactions across social media.

The student explained that her mother and three sisters had travelled to the university to celebrate her official entry into higher education, an event the family had looked forward to with excitement. She said her mother was filled with joy throughout the ceremony, proudly watching her daughter take the next step in her academic path. They also took a photograph together, which later became their final moment captured on camera.

In her post, the young lady recounted how she received a phone call from an unknown number just one hour after the ceremony ended. The caller informed her that her mother and sisters had been involved in a serious accident while returning home. When she arrived at the hospital, she learned that although her sisters had survived with severe injuries, her mother had died from the accident.

The grieving student described her devastation and said the tragedy shattered what should have been one of the happiest days of her life. She also admitted that she initially blamed herself for allowing them to come, although many online sympathisers encouraged her to let go of the guilt.

She wrote in part:

“My matriculation day. This day November 14. My mum was very proud of me. She disappeared in an hour. That was the last day I saw my mum in this scary world. My three sisters had an accident. It was serious. I lost my mom. My sisters are in a bad condition which I cannot describe. I still cannot believe my mom is gone.”

She ended her message by praying for her mother’s soul to rest in peace and expressing her love for her.

Her post quickly gained widespread attention, with thousands of Nigerians sending condolences, prayers and words of encouragement. Many described the incident as a painful reminder of the unpredictability of life and how quickly joy can turn into heartbreak.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement on the accident, and the cause remains unknown. Meanwhile, social media users continue to support the young woman, offering emotional comfort as she deals with an unimaginable loss.
