A Nigerian fashion designer has raised alarm after allegedly losing N2.6 million to a fraudulent developer who collected payments from more than 30 prospective tenants for the same two bedroom apartment in Lagos.
The victim, identified on social media as @dorah_xo, said she and her sister paid for the apartment in October with hopes of securing a long term home. Their excitement quickly turned into shock when they discovered that dozens of other people had also paid for the same property.
According to her account, the developer disappeared shortly after receiving the payments, leaving the victims stranded without access to the apartment or any form of communication. She noted that efforts to reach the individual have been unsuccessful, and attempts to get help from the authorities have not yielded results.
The fashion designer, who also works as a virtual assistant to supplement her income, described the loss as emotionally and financially devastating.
In a TikTok video, she said she had been struggling to cope with the situation.
“We have not gotten any response. We have spoken to the authorities. Everything we have been doing is not yielding anything positive. And the worst part is that where me and my sister are staying, the rent will expire this November. I am helpless at this point. I need advice on what to do,” she said.
She revealed that their current rent will expire this month, leaving her and her sister with no alternative accommodation and no immediate solution in sight.
In her online posts, she issued a warning to Nigerians, especially those searching for accommodation in Lagos.
“Scam alert. House hunting in Nigeria is becoming a horror movie. This man collected money from over 30 people for one house and disappeared. I am sharing this because I need help and I do not want anyone else to go through this,” she wrote.
