A Nigerian lady has shared her emotional experience online after a promising relationship ended because of her state of origin. The woman, identified as Perpettual Ejeh, revealed on TikTok that she was left devastated when her partner’s mother rejected her for being from Benue State.
According to Perpettual, the man she was dating had no issues with her background and was willing to proceed with the relationship. However, his mother allegedly disapproved and insisted that her son could not marry someone from Benue, which ultimately led to the end of the relationship.
In her emotional video, Perpettual said she felt confused and heartbroken.
“I just lost a potential husband. Guess why. Because of my state. Because I am from Benue State. The guy is not the issue. The guy is not even bothered about where I am from. Guess who is bothered. The mother. I do not know what to say. I do not know if I should be angry or I should laugh,” she said.
She added that watching a future she had hoped for disappear so suddenly was painful and disorienting.
Her story has drawn widespread sympathy on social media, with many Nigerians pointing out that family prejudice and cultural expectations still affect relationships across the country.
One user commented, “Family interference really ruins relationships sometimes.”
Another wrote, “It is heartbreaking to see love lost because of things you cannot control.”
