A Customs officer has been killed following an attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists on a Nigeria Customs Service checkpoint in Maje, Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The attack occurred on Saturday night when the assailants, reportedly riding motorcycles, opened fire on the checkpoint before fleeing into the nearby border forests. The officer was confirmed dead at the scene, while security personnel reportedly sustained no fatalities.
The development was reported on Sunday by Bakatsine, a conflict and crisis journalist covering insecurity in Nigeria’s northwest. He noted that the latest attack comes shortly after another major security incident in the same local government area.
On October 31, Lakurawa gunmen abducted the Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly during a raid in Bagudo town. The lawmaker was rescued on Saturday evening following a security-led operation, although details of the rescue remain undisclosed.
Residents in the affected communities continue to live in fear, as the group operates across rural areas of Bagudo LGA, taking advantage of the remote terrain along the Nigeria Benin and Nigeria Niger border corridors. Reports suggest that local movement has been restricted due to concerns over further attacks.
Security sources say that Lakurawa militants are increasingly bold, targeting government installations and checkpoints, and exploiting the border areas for quick escape. The group has carried out several kidnappings and raids in recent months, raising concerns about law enforcement and community safety in the region.
