A 23-year-old hotel worker, Victoria Emmanuel, is receiving treatment for severe burns after she was allegedly attacked with boiling water by her colleague’s girlfriend, Chioma Michael, in Kano. The incident occurred on November 10 at a residence in Kawo.
Victoria had accompanied her colleague, 28-year-old Shadrach Michael, to pick up items for his upcoming birthday celebration. Reports indicate that Shadrach suggested a brief stop at his apartment before proceeding to the market.
According to Victoria’s sister, Rosemary Emmanuel, trouble began when Chioma called to say she was visiting. Although Shadrach reportedly discouraged her from coming, she allegedly arrived minutes later and met Victoria in the apartment.
Rosemary stated that Chioma claimed she wanted to take a warm bath and began boiling water. When the gas ran out, she borrowed more from a neighbour and continued heating it. Moments later, she allegedly poured the boiling water on Victoria, burning her face, back, chest, and hands.
Shadrach reportedly struck Chioma in shock as she fled, allegedly taking Victoria’s phone. Rosemary claimed Victoria was locked inside the apartment for nearly five hours without medical attention. The family later received a call from Victoria, who had been taken to Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital. She was subsequently transferred to a clinic in Nomansland due to the unavailability of a doctor.
The incident was reported at the Hotoro Police Division around midnight. Police arrested Chioma’s mother to compel the suspect to appear. Chioma later turned herself in, and the case was transferred to the Bompai Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Rosemary Emmanuel denied rumours of a relationship between Victoria and Shadrach, insisting they were only co-workers. She also alleged that Chioma has shown no remorse. Victoria is still receiving treatment and is reportedly responding well.
A Magistrate Court sitting in Kawaji, Dakata, on Monday ordered Chioma’s remand at Goron Dutse Correctional Centre until December 9.
During the hearing, both Chioma and Rosemary presented their accounts. Counsel for the defendant, Chris Njogwu, applied for bail, but Magistrate Zuhura Madaki refused the request. The magistrate noted that Chioma was charged with attempting to commit culpable homicide under Section 229 of the Penal Code, an offence punishable by life imprisonment or, in some cases, death. She added that suspects charged with capital offences can only be granted bail by a High Court judge under exceptional circumstances.
The case has been adjourned to December 9 for further mention.
